“FINE TOONED:” An art exhibition by syndicated cartoonist, Tony Rubino, whose work appears, daily in the “Chicago Sun-Times”
To be held at the Howard Finster Vision House Chicago
May 6 — June 1, 2011
Reception: May 6th and 7th, 6:00 PM — 9:00 PM

Cartoonist & “Sun-Times” contributor Premiers Art Exhibition in Chicago

You’ve seen his popular comic strip, “Daddy’s Home,” in The “Chicago Sun-Times,” where it is featured, every day. Now, New York artist, Tony Rubino comes to The Howard Finster Vision House Chicago with his premier fine art exhibition.

Tony Rubino is the creator of the Internationally Syndicated Comic Strip, “Daddy’s Home,” which appears in more than 200 newspapers and websites and is read by 15 Million people every day. www.gocomics.com/daddyshome

“I started cartooning in junior high to impress the chicks,” says Rubino, “a strategy that failed epically.”

In addition to his syndicated comic, Tony has contributed writing and art to publications such as: “MAD Magazine,” “National Lampoon,” and “Cracked.” He’s written “nine or ten books (I forget),” he says, including, “Why Didn’t I Think of That, 101 Inventions That Changed The World By Hardly Trying,” and the pop culture classic, “Life Lessons from Elvis,” Tony’s words and designs can also be seen on product lines, including calendars, posters and apparel, sold in stores and catalogs like: Bloomingdale’s, Lord and Taylor, Wal-Mart, Spencer’s Gifts, Signals, and Wireless. He is also an accomplished creative director and art director for the advertising and marketing industries. www.rubinocreative.com

This eclectic range of disciplines is immediately apparent in his exhibition.

“I love this medium,” says Rubino. “It allows so much freedom, and gives me the opportunity to punctuate what I do. I’m able to focus different forms of my art on each canvas. In some pieces I pick up where my cartoon leaves off on the printed page. I extend certain premises or themes from the comic into a more abstract arena. So, you’ll recognize some of the art from, ‘Daddy’s Home.’ But in other cases I go off in directions that have nothing to do with cartoons and comment on pop culture, celebrity, nostalgia technology, or whatever else is rattling around in my head.”

Indeed, Rubino’s fusion of humor, wit, cartooning and graphic design make for an impressive debut. Twelve pieces are on display at The Howard Finster Vision House, and when you see them, you immediately know you’re looking at something new— something different.

“It’s Pop Art with a twist.”

The show runs from May 6th through June 1.
Opening reception is May 6th and 7th from 6-9pm.

Thanks again for your Pelican pontification! Always a pleasure. Many of you commented that he’s a tad darker than usual. It’s true. He is. Here’s why:
Gary does the color on the Sundays only. The dailies are rendered in black and white because some papers don’t print them in color. But we do have many clients who require color. So, we send our black and white dailies to our editors at Creator’s Syndicate. There, a nice lady named Jennifer makes sure we don’t makes asses of ourselves by correcting any spelling errors and occasionally sends us a note that says something like, “Tony, are you sure you want to insult everyone who likes Justin Bieber?” OR “Tony, it’s better to use ‘freaking’ instead of ‘#!%@’ because the newspaper editors don’t like curses to be left up to interpretation.” A policy, which I always find baffling because I think everybody is clear on what word “freaking” is being used to replace. No? But I digress. Anyhoo, we also send the cartoons to an entirely different joint to be processed and distributed to the various newspapers and websites. There, the dailies are “colorized” by a colorist who normally does a flawless job and is very consistent. So, Gary and I don’t see the color versions until they appear in newspapers and online. Well, for some reason our color person had a bit of a heavy hand on the Pelican in this last story line and he came out a bit darker than usual. So, we will see about correcting that in the future. Meantime, if it makes you feel any better, let’s just say that the Pelican got a spray tan when I wasn’t looking. As for him being chunkier than usual… well I guess he just gained a little weight over the holidays. But, hey, didn’t we all?
Later,
Tony

Upper West Side, Manhattan Island, New York,
June 4, 1844, 11:44 PM

Once before a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and bleary,
Over many a volume from yonder Comics store,
In my bed, but not napping, suddenly there came a flapping,
As if something wildly slapping, slapping at my chamber door.
`’Tis my mother,’ said I, `Vexing at my chamber door –
Only this and nothing more.’

Startled I let slip my tome down upon my bedroom floor,
Sincerely I felt sorrow, because this magazine, I did borrow,
Must give it back upon the morrow; give it back to Sidney Shore -
Sid has had, since School of Grammar, “Explicit Content” comics of every manner -
Good for this and nothing more.

If my mother spied my shame, surely the Devil she would blame,
So thinking fast I hid “Ye Old MAD Magazine” behind my chamber pot on the floor,
My heart beating, senses heightened I stood repeating,
`Surely I locked my chamber door, Mother will not catch me like before,’

My booty exposed no longer, my confidence then grew stronger,
`Ma,’ said I, `A moments peace, please, I implore!
Mother, the fact is I was napping, when you came so gently rapping,
Soon your gums they will be flapping, flapping at my chamber door,
Why must you be such a bore’ – and here I opened wide the door -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, squinting I stood leering.
My eyes examining the empty spot where my Mother was not standing on the floor,
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
Then I heard one word spoken, a whispered word, `Lenore.’
This I whispered, to myself and wondered, ‘Who the hell’s Lenore?’
This I muttered, nothing more.

Once again sly and crafty, my thoughts returning to Al Jaffee,
Soon again I heard a flapping somewhat louder than before,
`Ma,’ said I, `Why must you hover? Hover by my door?’
Let me learn of what she seeks, her meddling I’ll explore -
Then I saw him stagger slightly – swagger toward me on the floor,
‘Twas a Raven that had rammed, slammed into my bedroom door.

Cringing somewhat with a shudder, when, with many flirt and flutter,
Entering Raven found me wonder, ‘What the hell is he here for?’
With beating wings true and pure, he perched above my chamber door -
Perched, and stared, and nothing more.

This ebony bird beguiling set my young face to smiling,
By the grave and stern expression of confusion that he wore,
`Why are you here my friend,’ said I, ‘Why do you perch above my door?’
The Raven seemed annoyed and croaked,
‘Like I said before: Lenore!’

Not expecting fowl, ungainly to speak so very plainly,
Though its answer little meaning – little relevancy bore,
For we cannot help agreeing, young or old, no human being,
Ever yet was cursed with seeing a speaking bird above his door -
Not in this nor days of lore.
And what was this about Lenore?

But the Raven, sitting lonely upon the frame, spoke only,
That one word, as if not sure I was the one he should implore.
Nothing further then he uttered – not a feather then he fluttered -
‘Til I scarcely more than muttered, `I know no person named, Lenore.’
Curtly consulting scrap of paper, as if to confirm his night’s caper,
He looked upon me as before,
Quote the Raven, Nevermore????’

Our confused stares unbroken, by reply so aptly spoken,
`Bird,’ said I, `Of this place you visit, are you certain, are you sure?’
He scratched his head and said, ‘Young Master, this surely is a disaster,
I’ve been down this block three times or more – is this not number 504?’
Said I, ‘you want the house next door.’
Quote the Raven, ‘Are you sure?!’

‘Yes,’ said I, ‘Odd raven, if I may be so brazen,
I am in the right, perhaps you had too long a flight,
You must be cursed with vision poor, for of this one thing I am sure,
The Allen Poe house next door is 504. ‘Tis 502 on this, my door.’
Asked the raven, ‘The house with the Sycamore?’
‘Yes,’ said I, and nothing more.
Quote the Raven, ‘Son of a whore!’

‘Damned directions!’ he did utter, and some curses did he mutter,
As his wings began to flutter, landing him back on my floor,
Out went he into the night and quite frantic was his flight,
Until completely out of sight – no longer at my chamber door,
But not before he left a gift, and not a pleasant one was this,
I rolled my eyes and thought, ‘what more -
Now, too, I must clean the floor?’
This I thought and nothing more.

As I stood, I conjectured, ‘At Poe’s house this bird must be expected,
And if there too he rejected, of this abuse he’ll take no more,
For whether he be Crow or Grouse, his quest this night for proper house,
Will end right there forever more.’

Raven gone, I was glad and too at once, a little sad,
For that silly bird was not so bad, when he perched upon my door,
Then all at once I felt a shiver and trembling I did quiver,
For by now he was at the door of the Poe house with the Sycamore,
And surely speaks the word, ‘Lenore,’
Though to my ears this had no meaning in recollection,
Edgar next door may be gleaning darker meaning in this word,
‘Lenore.’

For with Raven’s errand interrupted, his intended task disrupted,
Now in most bad of moods, this once lost bird now surely broods,
And if at first he, more or less, wished to bring happiness,
From this lost soul called Lenore,
Now so flustered and so shaken, his message may be mistaken,
I fear this fowl in foul of mood will come across as bleak and rude,
And poor Poe in the house next door will be the same, no more.

Though not completely to my taste, to me this time was not a waste,
For a lesson I did learn and to the night impart in turn:

‘When a demon comes to visit before engaging ask, “Who is it,”
Before he causes you distress, be sure he’s got the right address.
If he belong there you determine, and entry gain you let this vermin,
Beware! For, right before he may have darkened the wrong door,
And come to you with mood effected, of his intentions he not sure –

Before you think his message crude; believe he be of Satan’s brood;
This bird with manner bleak and lewd;
Might just be in a “lousy mood.”’

This I’ll say… nothing more.
And with that I closed my door.

###

Ever watch a television show or movie that has a birthday party scene and notice something missing? There’s the cake and balloons and even sometimes a little Pin the Tail on the Donkey, but usually they never actually sing “Happy Birthday.” (Watch for it next time.) Why? Well as it turns out, every time the melody and lyrics are used in a broadcast, royalties must be paid to Warner Communications. That’s right. Someone makes money off of that little ditty. The company bought the rights to the song from Burch Tree Group, Ltd. in 1988 for . . . $25 million! I know! Especially when you consider that the melody was originally crafted as a morning sing-along for school children. As it turns out, “Happy Birthday to You” started as “Good Morning to All” in 1859. Written by schoolteacher Mildred J. Hill, the classroom greeting switched it lyrics to celebrate growing a year older in 1893. It wasn’t copyrighted until 1935. Although it’s used conservatively, the song still reportedly generates $2 million per year in royalties.

So they held that Comic Con (which is short for, Comics Convention) this past weekend in NYC. Maybe you’ve heard of it, or maybe you’ve been. It’s gotten extremely popular in the past few years. The thing is, I’ve been before and I know it’s not a “comics convention” for the kind of “comics” I do, but they let me in for free so I figured I’d go— sort of hoping it might be a good thing to do, professionally. It wasn’t. But just in case anyone is interested and unfamiliar with all the hype I took a few photos to sum it all up for you.

It’s a lot of this:

And some of this:

A good bit of this sort of thing:

Occurrences of this:

A decent amount of this (which is nice):

A little bit of this:

Some of this:

But mostly this:
